What is Aikido?The FounderAikido is a modern martial art, developed last century by Morihei Ueshiba, known as O'Sensei (Great Teacher). O'Sensei studied a number of traditional Japanese martial arts and developed aikido as a synthesis of these and his spiritual realisation.O'Sensei passed away in 1969 at the age of eighty six, having devoted most of his life to the development and teaching of aikido. The ArtAikido has roots in unarmed, spear and sword techniques and is an effective martial art. It is known for its application of non-resistance and an emphasis on harmony in the face of conflict.The essence of aikido lies beyond the resolution of physical conflict.
